Summer Reading Yays: Kids Edition to Boost Your Glow
Today I’m taking my kids to the library to cash in some of their summer reading program points. Summer reading is a great way to break the slump and learning slide.
They haven’t quite latched onto the love of independent reading like I have (yet), but they absolutely love stories and get hooked wanting to know what’s next.
To help you bust up any summer slumps and inspire creating some Glow resetting quiet time, discover 3 kids books that can boost your Connection Glow with your family and are some of the suggestions from my kids’ Read and Loved Lately list. *affiliate links support Bookshop.org and your local bookstore.
Hilarious Picture Book
Even though my kids are 8 and 10, they still love a good picture book and it feels good to have them want to cuddle up with me to see the pictures and giggle about what they spot.
I came across Bearsuit Turtle after listening to a recent episode of Creative Pep Talk and immediately put several on hold at the library.
It has such a sweet, quirky story and fun illustrations, my youngest keeps going back to it to quote parts of the story. I love how a book can create a memorable family moment and an ‘inside joke’ for us. Definitely a boost to my Connection Glow!
Graphic Novel with Audio Book
My youngest spotted The Investigators on the Lost and Found table at the pool recently. It’s a colorful graphic novel and the graphics and goofy characters captured his attention immediately He read it while he was there and had to be convinced to leave it there because he was loving it so much.
When we got home I immediately checked the library online. While we’re waiting for it to come in at the library, we are finding the audio version from Hoopla to be so hilarious.
This made story time at bedtime a little too silly at times, but I loved how it was a surprising boost to my Creative Glow. I love that they reformatted it to be more like a radio show, so fitting for this graphic novel. The voices, sound effects and audio version sidebars made it fun even for me to listen to.
Supernatural Series
My kids haven’t shown any interest in Harry Potter or some of the other really popular series for kids (and kids at heart), so I’m always keeping my eyes open for something that will catch their interest.
I forget how I found this series, but we have eagerly awaited the last 2 new releases and already excited for the last book in the series coming out in February.
As I read this aloud to them at bedtime (and during the day when we’ve left off on a cliffhanger), it has provided some good moments of conversation to talk about the plot and how they would handle things their own lives. It’s a compelling plot with a mix of real life struggles paired with supernatural abilities and gives some good inspiration for reminding my kids about the power of their Sovereign Glow.
Your Adventure of the Week
Reading is a great way to expand your horizons and support your Glow this summer. This week, find a fun book to read together as a family or on your own. Use the suggestions here or check out all of the books I recommend for fun and personal growth.
Boost your Connection Glow by spending time together or with some characters that make you feel seen
Reclaim your Sovereign Glow by staking out time for you to dip out and into a great book
Grow your Creative Glow by grabbing a craft book (or Pinterest) and discover inspiration to make something fun
Go Deep Within Yourself
I have discovered that reading is also a great way to boost your emotional intelligence. Diving into a good story gives you a glimpse into how other people handle real life situations, even in the campiest of romance novels. It can also help you think of new ways to solve problems you’re having in your own life.
Treat yourself to a glow boosting read and figure out why you’re feeling stuck, lost, or just plain ‘meh’ when you pause for a moment and get honest with yourself.
Ask yourself-
What was my favorite book as a kid and how did it make me feel?
If I could have a super ability like the kids in the Forgotten Five series, what would it be?
What ‘suit’ do I put on and how to things change when I’m finally myself like in Bearsuit Turtle?
How can solving a mystery in my own life be as silly as in The Investigators?
What lesson does my own self need to learn, like a book character might?
