What the First Half of the Year Might Be Trying to Show You
*updated June, 2026
As we reach the halfway point of the year, many people immediately start evaluating. Am I on track? Am I behind? Have I accomplished enough? Even if you didn’t set a new year’s resolution, it’s a normal timeframe to notice how things are going. For a world run by metrics and meeting projected deadlines, it’s natural for this to creep into our daily lives as well.
But before we measure progress, what if we paused to observe? Not to judge or fix, but simply to notice.
You might notice that goals or dreams you had for the year are-
going according to plan
looking different halfway in
already veered off course
no longer relevant
shifted due to new priorities have come into play
And it’s easy to blame yourself if you’re not where you thought you would be by now. This isn’t necessarily a recommitment point, it’s an observation point. The halfway mark gives us enough distance to begin seeing patterns that were difficult to notice while we were living them. Before deciding what comes next, pause and notice what the first half of the year may already be trying to show you.
This is a good time to acknowledge that sometimes a goal doesn’t fail, the conditions change. This moment is for checking in and observing the patterns that are building a life that supports what lights you up.
What Has Your Capacity Been Showing You?
Many people interpret exhaustion as failure, a lack of motivation or as a lack of discipline. But what if exhaustion is information? What if your capacity has been trying to tell you something all year?
One thing I’ve noticed is that many people blame themselves for what is actually a capacity issue. We assume we’re procrastinating, feeling unmotivated or just not disciplined enough. But sometimes our capacity has been trying to tell us something all along.
The halfway point of the year is a natural time to notice what your capacity has been showing you. Before deciding what stays, what goes, and what needs your attention in the second half of the year, spend a few moments observing.
Ask-
What has repeatedly captured my attention?
What has consistently created friction?
What has felt unexpectedly alive?
What keeps returning, even after I've tried to ignore it?
These observations often reveal more than a traditional goal review.
Observe the Flow and Friction
Sometimes it is tricky to actually name specific things that have blocked you or helped you along. Sometimes it’s helpful to simply notice how things have made you feel and use that to help suss out what your Glow is letting you know. As you look back on the first half of the year, notice-
Flow-
What has felt energizing?
What has felt meaningful?
Where has momentum naturally appeared?
Friction-
What has consistently required force?
What has felt heavy?
What keeps draining capacity?
Neither flow nor friction is good or bad. Both are information and show up as signals that you can start to notice.
It can help you notice what level of support you are able to give your goals based on your capacity. This is a good time to update your goals for the rest of the year. Evaluate to ensure that each item is something you want to do for yourself, not because “someone” thinks you should. That working toward it helps make your Glow feel a bit more supported.
Look at each item and ask yourself, “for this to feel as easeful as possible for my highest level of success, how are Flow and Friction showing up and affecting my capacity?”
Fraudy feelings about being worthy of hitting the goal?
Frantic tasks to finish at the last minute?
Extra costs or time required?
And once you’ve noticed what has been tripping you up with added friction, you can address each one by coming up with ways to help you create more flow.
Prepare a couple pep talks for yourself
Make a list with deadlines so things aren’t all falling to the last minute
Acknowledge your capacity and budget your dollars and time ahead of time so they don’t turn into excuses
So now what
In this season, take some time to really observe and notice the signals that you are picking up on. It is really helpful to create this sort of outside perspective about what is going on and collecting data you can review in a more objective way.
It can be confusing or overwhelming to know what steps to take next when you don’t feel grounded in where you are. The Observation Snapshot is a simple guide that helps you capture the signals and help you navigate the terrain of life with a better understanding of everything at play.
This practice can also support you in acknowledging and celebrating the growth you’ve made so far, even if it wasn’t in the direction that you intended or noticing the progress you’ve made. Sometimes what we need most isn't more pressure. It’s support, remembering that we have our own back. And by noticing the conditions that help us navigate well.
Your observations hold so much power, and capturing helps reinforce those neural connections. And going back to read them activates them even more.

Before You Rush Into the Rest of the Year
Pause. Notice. Observe. What has the first half of the year been trying to show you? What patterns have emerged and what signals keep appearing? Do you know what has your capacity been communicating? You don’t need all the answers or a perfect plan. You only need enough perspective to begin orienting toward what comes next.
